The VTS Trainee placed in Psychiatry will usually be working in a General Psychiatry post, the details of which post will be decided in the few weeks before the placement. All the training posts will be suitable for General Practitioner Trainees because they are all working with Community Psychiatrists.

The training will involve exposure to patients with a wide variety of mental illness problems, many of which would also be commonly seen in Primary Care. There will be opportunities to work with multi-disciplinary teams, both in the in-patient facilities and with the Community Mental Health Team.

Specific features of the training available to VTS trainees include:

1   Attendance at the regular Tuesday afternoon VTS training

2  Attendance at the regular Wednesday morning training in Psychiatry. VTS
trainees  can choose whether this meets their needs of the time could be more
     constructively spent in other training.

3  The opportunity to use, and further develop a Learning Contract which is available
    from the Course Organiser.

The clinical duties of the trainee will include some in-patient care, attendance at multi-disciplinary team meetings to discuss in-patients, as well as out-patient work. Psychiatry is a speciality which has developed multi-disciplinary team working, and there will be ample opportunities to work with others. There is an on-call commitment.

Further information is available from the Junior Doctors’ Handbook. There is a comprehensive induction programme, including an introduction to Psychiatric History Taking, Mental Health Act, Psychotropic Prescribing and Management of Aggression.
