Aims

  • To develop increased knowledge of common ophthalmological conditions and their management.
  • To have some awareness of more unusual ophthalmological conditions
  • To be able to recognise urgent ophthalmic conditions
  • To be able to manage eye conditions in the community appropriately
  • To increase awareness of the impact of ophthalmological conditions on the patient.

One day in the A & E Ophthalmology Unit

A new purpose built ophthalmology building at the Hull Royal Infirmary site was completed in 2003

2001

ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat also known as Otolaryngology)

Based at:-

Aims

  • To gain understanding of general ENT and an appreciation of supra-specialisation and its benefits
  • To improve diagnostic ability of common and serious ENT conditions.
  • To gain a competent understanding of conditions that;
    a) must be referred, b) should be referred & c) need not be referred.

Service Commitments:

There are none – the post is one day in the ENT department.

Educational Methods Used:

  • One to one tutoring, apprenticeship style.
  • Reading assignments.
  • Problems solving, case study and decision making processes.

Special features of the post:

  • Dedicated one to one teaching
  • Ward round teaching
  • General (GP) ENT and supra-specialisation
  • Continual assessment

Assessment:

Continual assessment (informal)

Formal viva near end of attachment

 

Evaluation:

  • Initial appraisal determines learning targets of the trainee with exam (if relevant) in mind
  • Feedback from trainee ward round teaching
  • Improvement in teaching methods and style.

Further Comments:

The trainee can also experience specialist clinics in head and neck surgery; neck lump clinic; thyroid clinic; voice clinic; otology clinic, rhinology and endoscopic sinus surgery clinic; paediatric otolaryngology clinic.
