The work of the Department:-
The Hull Maternity Hospital is the only specialist Maternity Hospital in Hull and takes problem patients from a much wider area. The hospital has 10 ante-natal beds, 36 postnatal beds and 16 beds in the delivery suit, the availability of two theatres and 24 cots in the Special Care Baby Unit, (six of which are intensive care cots).
Each Consultant holds one ante-natal clinic per week. There are two further ante-natal clinics and approximately 3,000 deliveries a year, with a forceps rate of 5% and a caesarean section rate of 22%. There are 10 Senior House Officers in post. The supervision of the Senior House Officers is by a Consultant and an arrangement exists such that a Consultant is present within the hospital on all days of the week. Consultants are, therefore, available for direct supervised training of the Senior House Officers.
Every Friday afternoon is dedicated to 'bleep free' in house training incorporating a quarterly regional rotation meeting with Beverley, Scarborough and Scunthorpe. Attendance is mandatory.
Each Senior House Officer is encouraged to present cases on the 4 times a week teaching Labour Ward rounds, and dedicated Antenatal and Gynaecology 'teaching' clinic attendance's are arranged.
The current post involves 3 months obstetrics and 3 months gynaecology at Hull Maternity Hospital. The post is recognised by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for training purposes for both Diploma and Membership.
