GUM (Genito-Urinary Medicine)

Based at:-

Conifer House, 32-36 Prospect St,

Clinical Tutor: Dr H McClean

Aims:

1  To be able to recognise, diagnose and
    manage common/urgent GUM problems.

2  To acquire increased knowledge in specialist
    areas applicable to Primary Care.

3  To understand the effects of GU disease on  
    the patient and partner

 

Service Commitments:

1  Sit-in on clinics

2  Participate in core genitourinary medicine
    clinics.

 

Educational Methods:

1  Teach in clinics.

2  Reviewing/discussion of patients.

3  Review of evidence base for clinical decision 
    making

 

Special Features:

1  Walk in clinics

2  Sexual dysfunction

3  HIV Clinics

4  Laboratory methods

5  Understand the roles of the multi-
    disciplinary GUM team including contact
     tracing.

 

Assessment:

1        By observation and discussion

 

Evaluation:

Not (?yet) formalised. ?Part of joint evaluative  exercise with trainee, myself and GP Trainers.

Further Comments:

Important that GP SpRs regularly occupy this training post. I would like more contact with the GP Trainers.

 

Dermatology

Based at:-

The Princess Royal Hospital, Saltshouse Road, Sutton, Hull.

Clinical Tutor: Dr S Walton

Aims:

To train GP registrars in the speciality with a view to lead on to the new specialist posts in the community.

 

Service Commitments:

Mainly sit-in clinics cryotherapy assistance and minor surgery assistance.

 

Educational Methods:

1  Teach in clinics

2  Occupational GP surgery seminars

3  Operating under supervision (on a 1:1 basis)

4  Formal lunch time teaching seminars inc

    lectures, case presentations and journal club

 

 

 

Special Features:

1  A lot of clinical material seen

2  To learn when patch tests are indicated and   
    how they are read

3  To witness specialised therapy – PUVA  
    & day case i.e. wet wraps.

4  Develop communication skills in dermatology

5  Participate in shared care (primary and

    secondary care)

 

Assessment:

1  By testing clinically.

2  Observing their operating and cryo skills.

3  GP SHO report – JCPTGP guidelines

 

Evaluation:

Based on the above and discussion with the registrar regarding training.

Further Comments:

I hope the registrars will continue through the department on a regular basis and we would like to see some of the registrars coming back to do GP Specialist sessions in the future.
