A Group Practice of five partners based in the picturesque market town of Beverley and covering a rural area on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds of approximately eight miles radius. The GP Registrar training here benefits from the combination of living in a market town with a large rural influence. The Partnership provides primary care facilities for 12,000 patients. It operates from modern, well-equipped premises acquired in 1984 and covered utilising the advantages of the Cost/Rent Scheme. It contains full facilities, including a Treatment Room, ECG, Spirometer, Audiometer, attached Practice Nursing Staff, with a minor operations room. Laboratory and X-Ray investigations are readily available. We have a physiotherapy on site and visiting consultants in orthopaedics and ENT. This allows us to manage many conditions at primary care level, enjoy excellent relations with consultant colleagues, and provides excellent resources for Registrars.

The Practice enjoys full Secretarial support. It is virtually paperless and provides a good example of the integration of computers into General Practice. With three trainers within the practice and the other partners committed to teaching, there are many learning opportunities. There is a comprehensive library, CD ROM and links to BMA, Medline and Internet access.

The local Westwood Hospital provides a full range of out-patient services and community beds to which the Partners and the Registrar have access, together with a Minor Injuries Unit.

Two of the partners have additional hospital sessions which involve Psychiatry and General Surgery, with the other Partners having a special interest in Occupational Medicine. A rota system operates in conjunction with other Practices in the town for out of hours cover, giving an on call commitment of approximately 1 in 7.5. The on call commitment is well managed, not onerous and gives an opportunity for learning skills in emergency medicine in the community.

The Practice provides every opportunity for enjoying a full range of General Practice experience. Whilst providing high quality care, the Partners place great emphasis on home and family life and expect the GP Registrar to have the opportunity to do likewise.
