Additional Info> Assessment

This is a test of competence completed at the end of training, resulting in a pass or fail. There is no built-in failure rate and the vast majority of Trainees should have no difficulty in passing it.

All four components of Summative Assessment must by law be passed.

  1. Multiple Choice Questionnaire (MCQ)
This consists of an MCQ paper, Modified Essay Question paper and a Critical Reading paper. The MCQ paper can be taken as part of the MRCGP examination or within regions as organised by the UKRA. The papers will be of 3 hours duration, testing knowledge and problem solving skills, and will be held on four separate occasions each year.
  2. Assessment of Consultation Skills
Submission of a video of your consultations or as an alternative, you may wish to take part in Patient Simulated Surgery. As with the MCQ paper the consultation video can also be put forward towards the MRCGP element.
  3. Written Submission of Practical Work
The written submission of practical work can be undertaken as an audit or under the National Project Marking Schedule marked as a project in the form of: a questionnaire study, notes review, literature search, audit, clinical case study, research study, plan for a new service in the practice, or a discussion paper.
  4. Structured Trainer’s Report
The Trainer's report, was developed following a national survey of Trainer's views. The Standards were produced by a consensus group of experienced Trainers. When these standards are reached the GP Registrar is considered to be ready for independent practice.

To be able to apply for the Joint Committee’s Certificate (essential to practise in any capacity in general practice in the UK), you will need to have passed all elements of Summative Assessment.
